The chairman of the Christian Democratic Party, Bjarne Kallis, intends to run to run for a place in the European Parliament next summer.

Kallis made his announcement at a meeting of the party’s parliamentary faction in Lappeenranta.

He also hoped that other party MPs would follow his example. In order for a political party to win a place in the EU Parliament, they have to win 5.5 percent of the vote. In the last elections, the Christian Democrats won 5.3 percent.

The current Christian Democrat in the EU Parliament, Eija-Riitta Korhola, won’t be standing for re-election. She was able to claim a seat because her party teamed up with the National Coalition in order to get more votes.

She hinted that one of the reasons she’s leaving is that there may have been a movement against her within her own party.
